Supernatural Spotlight: Peppermint

The Winter Holidays are here, which means… Peppermint everything! Peppermint is an incredible herb that has been introduced to many facets of our lives. Whether it’s in refreshing and energizing teas, as an oil for combatting nausea and headaches, in our body washes and shampoos, or simply in our favorite sweet cravings, Peppermint is a fact of life!

Peppermint is thought to have originated in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. This magical herb is listed in an ancient Egyptian medical text dating to 1550 BC, for its use as a calming agent to stomach pains. Mint was so valued in Egypt that it was used as a form of currency! Peppermint was eventually introduced to Europe where it also became a popular culinary and medicinal herb. It gained in popularity over the centuries as cheesemakers learned that the strong smell of peppermint would keep pests out of storage while monks in the Middle Ages were known to use peppermint as a tooth polisher and general-purpose herbal remedy.

Softens Indigestion and Clears Migraines

Peppermint has long been known for its medicinal properties, but more recent studies have shown that this multifaceted herb is capable of aiding in a number of ailments. As a fresh herb added to your tea it can help energize the mind and calm headaches. Place it under your nose as a raw oil to also help with headaches or soften nausea. Two trials demonstrated that a topical application of peppermint oil can help relieve the symptoms of a tension headache. One of them found peppermint oil to be as effective as Tylenol or paracetamol for pain relief!

Menthol, the main chemical component of peppermint, is an effective decongestant. Decongestants shrink the swollen membranes in the nose, making it easier to breathe. Menthol is also an expectorant. Expectorants loosen and bring up mucus from the lungs. Expectorants help people with coughs.

The Power of Peppermint

Mint gets its name from the Greek word minthe. Minthe is the name of a naiad, or water nymph, who lived in one of the rivers in Hades. Peppermint is a legendary status in many mythologies around the world for its spiritual applications.

Peppermint has long been used in temples to shake up and dispel heavy negative vibrations and energetic patterns. Peppermint’s aroma is a cleansing bell for mental clarity and prophetic visions, it helps to apply some oil to your wrists and temples before bed to awaken lucid dreaming and sharpen your third eye.

Peppermint also provides safety and tight protection to anyone near it. That is why planting a peppermint in a pot and placing it near the front door protects the homestead from unwanted energies. Let it sit beside you in every meditation practice or place it on the altar after rituals to expel evil spirits and enhance daily protection for you and your family.
