Valentine's Day is approaching fast! If you’re like me, you don’t want to rush to the store for some basic flowers and chocolate that always underwhelms. Surprise your significant other with a unique plant that will show you actually put some thought into it this year! 1. Bird of Paradise

Beautiful, lush, exotic. The bird of paradise is a wonderful plant that can make for a jaw dropping gift for Valentine's Day. They can grow to large sizes depending on their soil and pot sizes and are a change up from the typical (and sometimes boring) flower arrangements. Because bird of paradise plants are tropical in nature, they need protection from cold and plenty of warmth and sun to thrive. In many cases, it's best to keep bird of paradise plants as potted container plants so they can easily be moved indoors in cool conditions.

2. String of Hearts

If you are looking for an easy-to-care-for, unique, and attractive houseplant for Valentine's Day, then you might love to gift a string of heart plant! Its leaves grow into cute little heart shapes on a vine, hence its name. This succulent, evergreen, trailing vine is perfect for planting in hanging baskets or in pots on shelves or window sills. It is a long-lived and fast-growing plant, and the sprawling vines can hang down several feet once they are mature.

3. Sweetheart Hoya

For the right person this is the perfect Valentine's gift and is the reason this plant sometimes goes by the name Valentine Hoya. Its attractive heart shape makes this little, easy-to-care for succulent the perfect cute gift plant to accompany some chocolates!

The flowers, like most Hoya's, are stunning as the contrast in the flowering parts are really bold. The all green variety tends to grow more quickly and it's arguably more hardy, but it also comes in plentiful varieties of other colors.

The anthurium is the world’s longest blooming plant. It’s rare to find a plant that will show the blooming of your love for your partner like the stunning anthuriums. Native to tropical environments, these plants are easy to care for and are popular for their bright flowers, which come in a variety of colors – red, pink and orange. Each anthurium flower spike can last up to 7 - 9 weeks. The anthurium pot plant and cut flower are very easy to look after, as they need very little attention to keep looking beautiful for a long time.

Word of Caution: Every part of the anthurium plant is toxic to humans and pets, so be sure to place it away from curious pets or children.

This bright colored cactus is also affectionately called the ruby ball cactus. The host cactus can be just about any species but is usually from the Hylocereus. Succulents make for great gifts due to their ease of care, you can forget to water them for a while, and make the perfect starter plant for new green-thumbed enthusiasts.

7. Heartleaf Philodendron

This is a plant known for its beautiful shiny heart shaped leaves. The leaves can take on a number of different colors but in the main they become a dark and glossy green color and can even almost look transparent at times. Also known as the “Sweetheart plant”, this native of the tropical jungle in the Central American regions is lenient to owners who forget to pay attention and it will still fend for itself to produce a magnificent bloom. This is another great plant for beginners, perfect for your loved one looking to add some greenery to your home!

8. Calico Kitten

Crassula marginalis rubra or 'Calico Kitten' is a dainty succulent with adorable heart-shaped leaves in varied shades of rose, cream, hot pink, and green. This adorable succulent looks equally at home spilling over rocks or paired with other succulents in containers. The 'Calico Kitten' needs at least filtered sunlight, though brighter light will deepen the pink coloration of its leaves. Be sure to water this plant only when the soil is completely dry, and pot in porous soil with adequate drainage.

Phalaenopsis or “Moth Orchids” are available everywhere you look. Most garden centers and many larger grocery stores will have a selection of these fantastic plants available to buy for really affordable prices. They are a wonderful alternative to a bunch of flowers to brighten up your home, as the flowers last for months at a time, and the plants can be kept for years, re-flowering many, many times. It can make the perfect flower to gift on Valentine's Day over the typical rose or other cheesy bouquets.
