You may have heard about the pH scale, it ranges from an acidic 0 to a basic 14, with a 7 being neutral. Baking soda sits at a 9 on the scale, meaning it is more basic. Our skin usually falls somewhere between 4.5-6.5, in the more acidic range.
When applied to the skin, the basic baking soda mixes with our skin’s acidic, oily protective layer (also known as the acid mantle) to neutralize your pH level, in turn helping to eliminate any odors it may have produced.
